Rewired, Not Retired

 

I’ve met more and more people who are still working way into their seventies. These folks like the supplemental income, sure, but they also like the work they do.

Today I played tennis with some women I know only as tennis buddies. This day turned out different than usual because one player didn’t show up because of the weather, and another player left early when it started to sprinkle. The remaining player and I played singles for six games (3-3 was the final game score) but then quit because the rain made the court slick.

We walked to the parking lot together and talked about our personal lives for the first time. A revelation. My tennis friend is seventy (looks fifty-five) and still working. She designs websites for businesses and has built her clientele by word of mouth. The number of clients she takes has been reduced somewhat from earlier years, but she loves doing what she does and has no plans to quit in the near future. Her son and his family live in Austin, Texas, and she is considering moving there to be near her grandchildren, but she can continue working from wherever she lives.

For those who think retirement means sitting in front of television and waddling to the kitchen for snacks, think again. This generation of retirees has spunk.
